Here are ten albums that made the union of rock and country sound like an excellent idea.
Country was where they began, as part of their family's down-home radio show, but they didn't make their first pure country album untiland although it didn't get much attention, it's one of their best. It was a promising direction for the commercially struggling siblings, but they didn't return to country until five years later, when they made the warm, innovative, and groundbreaking ' Roots '.
Both albums are tremendously appealing, a slightly softer version of the more assertive Bakersfield Sound. He was comfortable in this setting, moving easily from the swamp-pop of " I'm a Fool to Care " to the honky-tonkin' " Bright Lights and Country Music " to the cajun sway of " Louisiana Man.
Clark and Leadon's " Train Leaves Here This Morning " feels like it's been around forever, like it's something they'd rescued off an old 78 it later turned up on the Eagles' debut ; " Out on the Side ," " She Darkened the Sun " Linda Ronstadt took that oneand " Something's Wrong " are among Clark's most moving songs; and " The Radio Song " is everything the country-rock bands who followed could only aspire to, as Californian as the Beach Boys, but out in the desert instead of on the beach.
Instead of travelling east to west in search of opportunity, many West Coast artists went in the other direction, winding up in Tennessee to get closer to the source of what they were grasping for. San Francisco's Beau Brummels were, in the mid-'60s, one of the first American bands to break the chart gridlock caused by all those English groups, and on their hits " Laugh Laugh " and " Just a Little " they hinted at the folk-rock boom to come. Their producer at Warner Brothers, Lenny Waronker, suggested a trip to Owen Bradley's studio outside of Nashville to cut their fifth album, so the last Brummels standing, singer Sal Valentino and songwriter-guitarist Ron Elliott, went east.
Moby Grape had made one of the best album debuts ever inbut were the victims of hype and hubris, and a disappointing follow-up, and Rubinson wants everyone to know that's in the past. This album, he says, is "an attempt to retrieve all that was once so honest and easy and simple. No caveats necessary, actually: this is a fine album, with a pronounced country-rock accent. That's OK. They were a band that should have made it, the way a bunch of bands with much bigger egos and less talent—in their original line-up, they had five strong singers and songwriters, and who else can claim that?
By the time that came out—a couple of labels passed on it, which will give you some idea of how much the Kingstons' stock had slipped—Stewart was already on to other things. After making a duet album with his wife, Buffy Ford, he did what so many other erstwhile folkie singer-songwriters were doing, and hopped over to Nashville. There are Things You Gave Me - Rick Nelson* - Bright Lights And Country Music / Country Fever (CD) many high points: the title track ; the autobiographical " Lonesome Picker "; " July, You're a Woman "; the final cut, " Never Goin' Back ," which had also been recorded by the post-John Sebastian edition of the Lovin' Spoonful.
It's a song about leaving, like so many country songs are, and about regret, like so many country songs are, and as the song fades out, John rolls the credits, thanking the musicians by name. As well he should. True to his word, he cut some of his next album there, the Peter Asher—produced ' Willard ', another fine one. Succinct and evocative, it's a song most country-rock bands would have given anything to be able to write, and Young's own original version he also cut it as the title track for his second LP in remains the best; it's the centerpiece of a debut solo album, ' Rock, Salt and Nails ', that's impressive start to finish.
Some tracks, like " Holler in the Swamp ," have strings by "Space Age pop" arranger Bob Thompson that give them a surreal swirl; some, like " Hoboin' ," are lean and bluesy. In the book Are You Ready for the Things You Gave Me - Rick Nelson* - Bright Lights And Country Music / Country Fever (CD) by Peter Doggett, Nesmith is quoted as saying "I was just pursuing a personal crusade," and admits that this crusade caused him to Things You Gave Me - Rick Nelson* - Bright Lights And Country Music / Country Fever (CD) heads with the group's creative brain trust.
But a bunch of his more-country tunes were attempted and scrapped during his Monkee time: " Some of Things You Gave Me - Rick Nelson* - Bright Lights And Country Music / Country Fever (CD) Blues ," which became a country-rock staple the Stone Poneys, Nitty Gritty Dirt Bandand songs that he eventually did when he formed the First National Band with pedal steel player Red Rhodes, drummer John Ware, and bassist John London. Most of those tracks are now floating around on deluxe editions of Monkees albums, so you can take those, add the officially released Nesmith country songs with the group, and assemble one of the earliest country-rock albums.
Side one, track one of ' Silk Purse ' starts with that voice: "I got a feeling called the blues, since my baby said goodbye. Still, it announced something different, something bold and confident, and although it took a few more tries for Ronstadt to find the formula that made her the '70s top female vocalist, 'Silk Purse' was the album that made her ascent seem, to some of us, inevitable.
